about
KEVIN OKUN IS AN OCEANOGRAPHER AND PHOTOGRAPHER BASED IN PACIFIC BEACH. HIS WORK FOCUSES ON INTERNAL WAVES AND THEIR EFFECTS ON THE COASTAL CURRENTS IN SAN DIEGO.
Kevin Okun is a PhD student and Graduate Researcher at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. In past positions, he has built and simulated sensors for high-energy and particle physics, photonics, quantum material science, and oceanography experiments. Building on his base training as a physicist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, he is focusing his PhD thesis on internal waves and their effects on near-shore currents and turbulence along the coast in San Diego. He has supported field observations for projects involving shallow water air-sea interactions, currents and turbulence through kelp fields, sediment heat diffusion on sparsely covered coral reefs, and a very large fiber optic array. This is where he takes pictures and this is where he writes about surf.
